นอกจากความสำคัญทางศาสนาแล้ว มัสยิดซาฮีร์ยังได้รับการจัดอันดับว่าเป็น หนึ่งใน 10 มัสยิดที่สวยที่สุดในโลก ด้วยสถาปัตยกรรมที่โดดเด่นและงดงาม จึงกลายเป็นสถานที่ที่นักท่องเที่ยวจำนวนมากต้องมาเยือนเมื่อเดินทางมาที่อาลอร์สตาร์

สถานที่ตั้งของมัสยิดนี้มีประวัติศาสตร์ที่สำคัญ เพราะถูกสร้างขึ้นบนพื้นที่สุสานของนักรบแห่งรัฐเคดาห์ที่เสียชีวิตในช่วง การรุกรานของสยามต่อรัฐเคดาห์ในปี ค.ศ. 1821

เอกลักษณ์ที่โดดเด่นที่สุดของมัสยิดซาฮีร์คือ โดมสีดำ อันงดงาม โดยโดมหลักขนาดใหญ่ถูกล้อมรอบด้วยโดมขนาดเล็กอีก 5 โดม ซึ่งเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของ หลักปฏิบัติ 5 ประการของศาสนาอิสลาม

การออกแบบมัสยิดได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจาก มัสยิดอาซีซี (Azizi Mosque) ในสุมาตราเหนือ ประเทศอินโดนีเซีย ซึ่งเห็นได้จากรูปแบบโดมและการตกแต่งผนังที่มีลวดลายสวยงาม

ภายในมัสยิด นักท่องเที่ยวจะได้ชมรายละเอียดสถาปัตยกรรมที่ประณีต เช่น เสาคู่ (double columns) และ ซุ้มโค้งตกแต่งอย่างสวยงาม ห้องละหมาดหลักถูกออกแบบเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัสขนาด 62 ฟุต x 62 ฟุต

เมื่อเงยหน้ามองขึ้นไปยังโดมด้านใน จะเห็นลวดลายแกะสลักที่ประดับด้วย โองการจากคัมภีร์อัลกุรอาน ซึ่งเพิ่มความงดงามและความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ให้กับสถานที่แห่งนี้

รอบห้องละหมาดหลักมีระเบียงทางเดินกว้างประมาณ 8 ฟุต ซึ่งช่วยสร้างบรรยากาศที่เงียบสงบ เหมาะสำหรับการเดินชมสถาปัตยกรรมของมัสยิด

Zahir Mosque (Masjid Zahir) is one of the most iconic landmarks in Alor Setar, Kedah, Malaysia. Built in 1912, it is among the oldest mosques in the country and a significant historical and religious site in Kedah.

The mosque has also been recognized as one of the 10 most beautiful mosques in the world, thanks to its impressive architecture and elegant design. Because of this, it has become a must-visit attraction for tourists visiting Alor Setar.

Interestingly, Zahir Mosque was built on the site of a cemetery for Kedah warriors who died during the Siamese invasion of Kedah in 1821.

One of the most distinctive features of the mosque is its beautiful black domes. The main dome is surrounded by five smaller domes, symbolizing the Five Pillars of Islam.

The architectural design of the mosque was inspired by the Azizi Mosque in North Sumatra, Indonesia, which shares similarities in its domes and decorative wall elements.

Visitors will be fascinated by the mosque’s intricate architectural details, including double columns and ornamented arches. The main prayer hall was designed as a perfect square measuring 62 feet by 62 feet.

Looking up inside the dome, visitors can see beautiful carvings decorated with verses from the Holy Quran, adding to the spiritual and artistic beauty of the mosque.

The other five domes sit above an 8-foot wide verandah walkway surrounding the main prayer hall, providing a peaceful atmosphere for visitors who stroll around the mosque.

Despite being more than 100 years old, Zahir Mosque has undergone only two major renovations, which took place in 1960 and 1975.

Visitors entering the mosque are required to dress modestly. Shoulders and knees must be covered for both men and women, and women are advised to bring a headscarf before entering the mosque.
